Some of us are genetically at risk of dementia, but there may be something we can do to reduce that risk. British scientists say sticking to a healthy lifestyle is associated with reduced risk of dementia regardless of genetic risk. But the risk of dementia was one-third lower in people with a high genetic risk if they followed a healthy lifestyle. Those with high genetic risk and a less healthy lifestyle were almost three times more likely to develop dementia. Joint lead author, Dr David Llewellyn says the research delivers a really important message that undermines a fatalistic view about genetic risks—that it appears we may be able to substantially reduce dementia risk by living a healthy lifestyle. The research appears in JAMA.
