ADDING SALT AT THE TABLE

from European Heart Journal

Most Americans consume at least one and one-half teaspoons of salt per day—far more than our bodies need. It raises risk of high blood pressure and other health issues. Salt is present in many prepared foods, so it is hard to control just how much salt we consume. Unless we keep track of how much salt we add to food. That is exactly what an international group of researchers did. Results of the study published in the European Heart Journal, show that compared to those who never or rarely added salt, those who added salt to their food had a twenty-eight percent greater risk of dying prematurely. Put another way, researchers calculate that at age fifty, always adding salt at the table cuts one and one-half years off the life expectancy for men and more than two years off the life of women.
