The first one thousand days of a baby’s
life are critical to lifelong mental health
and development. In saying that, a new
policy statement from the American
Academy of Pediatrics urges that parents
move beyond a so-called “good diet” for
newborns to food that provides adequate
amounts of brain-building nutrients.
Nutrition for pregnant women is included
in the statement, appearing in the journal
Pediatrics. The statement cites research
revealing the rapid and complex
sequences of brain growth that take place
between conception and age two.
Adequate amounts of key nutrients can
help child’s brain develop normally and
avoid permanent deficits in brain function.
