AFTER THE HIGH

from journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence

Despite increased legal availability of marijuana, driving while high on marijuana certainly fits the definition of impaired driving. But what about after the high wears off? A study from McLean hospital may be the first to address that question. Using a driving simulator, heavy marijuana users demonstrated poorer driving performance than non-users—such as hitting more simulated pedestrians and running more red lights—even though they had not used marijuana for at least twelve hours. Researchers caution this does not mean everyone who uses marijuana is affected the same way, but there are differences between users and non-users, even after the marijuana high wears off. The study appears in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
