For many of us, losing weight is an
important goal. Maintaining weight loss is
also important, especially for people with
type 2 diabetes. A study published in the
Journal of the American Heart Association
found that people with diabetes who
regained weight lost the initial benefits of
reduced risk of heart disease or stroke.
The study involved nearly sixteen hundred
people with diabetes who took part in an
intensive weight loss program. Volunteers
who lost ten percent or more of their
initial body weight—and maintained much
of that for four years saw improvements in
cholesterol, blood sugar and other
diabetes factors. Regaining lost weight
resulted in losing those benefits.
Programs are available to help diabetics
lose weight and maintain it.
