Cancer patients are often less active than
adults without cancer. That is
understandable, but a paper published in
the European Journal of Preventive
Cardiology says exercise is essential for
cancer patients. Defining the intensity
and amount of exercise is important while
avoiding muscle soreness, fatigue and
sleep disorders. Endurance exercise is
more effective for reducing inflammation,
but resistance training may be a better
starting point for frail cancer patients.
The paper says ongoing treatment should
not be a reason to avoid exercise, but
patients are urged to consult their doctor
before starting a new activity since
specific exercises are helpful for certain
types of cancer—and conversely, certain
cancer patients should avoid some types
of exercise.
