from Journal of Endocrinology
If you need motivation to exercise, you’re
not alone. However, a study in the
Journal of Endocrinology has a possible
solution. Using laboratory animals, the
study found that limiting access to food
increased levels of the hormone ghrelin
may increase motivation to exercise. It
suggests limiting food intake to mealtimes
or fasting intermittently could help
overweight people maintain a more
effective exercise routine and lose weight,
possibly avoiding debilitating complications
of obesity such as diabetes and heart
disease. Ghrelin is often called the hunger
hormone because it stimulates the
appetite by activating the reward circuitry
in the brain. Researchers say more work
is needed to confirm the ghrelin response
in humans.
