LOSS IN LIFE EXPECTANCY

from International Journal of Obesity

People in their twenties tend not to be concerned with long-term consequences of their health behaviors. However, a new study shows being overweight in your twenties may take up to ten years off your life. The study in the International Journal of Obesity noted risks of early death associated with excess weight were apparent in every age group, but obesity as young adults is really significant. The Australian researchers say obese women in their forties may lose four years of life expectancy. Obese men of the same age may lose five years. But the study found the greatest loss of life expectancy were for people in their twenties—as many as ten years. Researchers say the findings are also relevant to other high-income countries.
