CONTROLLING PRIVACY

from American Associates of Ben Gurion University, Israel

In this era of smartphones and other online devices, privacy issues have become glaringly important. If you believe you have control over what personal information you share, a new study challenges that belief. American Associates of Ben Gurion University in Israel sought to show how to get online users to disclose more information than they intended--by asking for less important information first, then moving to more private information. Websites can further manipulate private information from users by spreading out the requests over several pages, rather than all the requests on one page. The researchers say the public and regulators should be aware of these privacy capture techniques.
