A GUT FEELING

from journal GUT

The variety and amount of bacteria in our gut, known as the gut microbiome, directly affects the pro and anti-inflammatory responses in the gut, which is then implicated in a wide range of inflammatory conditions elsewhere in the body, such as arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, as well as inflammatory diseases of the gut itself, such as irritable bowel syndrome. Research published in the journal Gut, found high consumption of animal products, processed foods, alcohol and sugar are linked to inflammation in the gut microbiome. Conversely, researchers found plant foods and fish were associated with friendly or anti-inflammatory gut bacteria. Yogurt and buttermilk were strongly associated with anti-inflammatory bacteria.
