NON-LINEAR AGING

from journal Science

As we age, a lot of physiological changes occur, including puberty and menopause. Timing of those is predictable, but less predictable is the effect of calorie consumption. Most of us can remember when we could eat anything we wanted and not gain weight. That changes over time but does not appear to follow the other age markers we associate with growing up and growing older. More than six thousand people from nearly thirty countries reported their average calorie consumption. The study, in the journal Science, may surprise you. The growth spurt of adolescence did not necessarily increase daily calorie needs. Our metabolisms remained mostly stable from twenty through fifties. So, middle age spread might be caused by other factors. The real decline in metabolism likely starts after age sixty.
