Misinformation has become pervasive on social media sites. Name the topic and you probably will find misinformation. This story, however, focuses on cancer treatment articles on the Internet. A study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reports one-third of the most popular cancer treatment articles online contain misinformation. Further, as much as three-quarters of that misinformation could harm cancer patient’s ability that could help their chance for survival. Dr Skyler Johnson of the University of Utah, who led the study urges open communications between patients and caregivers to help identify cancer misinformation, although he understands why patients seek information from any source when dealing with a new disease.
