BEVERAGE INDEX

from Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

With lots of information about which beverages to consume or not to consume, the scientists at Virginia Tech have come to our rescue with a new healthy beverage index. By using the index we can earn up to one hundred points by consuming healthy beverages, such as water for at least twenty percent of our daily fluid intake or consuming less than ten percent of daily calories from sugary drinks. The index also assigns points to coffee, tea, low-fat milk and wine, but still encourages the recommended amount of water. Researchers found the biggest differences between high and low scores came from people not consuming enough water, consuming too many calories from beverages and not consuming enough fluid over all. The index is published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
