GUIDELINES WORK

from American Association for Cancer Research

Leading cancer organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, publish cancer prevention guidelines, but how effective are they? The American Association for Cancer Research reviewed studies within the last ten years. The review showed cancer prevention guidelines about diet and physical activity are associated with a reduction in all types of cancer of ten to forty-five percent. Conversely, unhealthy choices, such as poor diet, physical inactivity, excess alcohol and unhealthy body weight could account for more than twenty percent of cancer. The review also suggests people who observed more of the guidelines benefitted most. For example, women who followed at least five recommendations were sixty percent less likely to develop breast cancer than women who met none of the recommendations.
