The difference between conventional two dimensional mammograms and the newer 3D mammograms might not be noticeable to a woman, but it is noticeable to doctors reading the results. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a large study featuring data from thirteen centers in this country. The findings show 3D mammography resulted in a twenty-nine percent increase in detection of all breast cancers and a forty-one percent increase in detection of invasive cancer. 3D mammography resulted in a fifteen percent decrease in unnecessary recalls for false alarms, saving women the anxiety and cost of a repeat test. Co-author Dr. Donna Plecha says we already knew that breast screening saves lives and this study provides firm data that 3D mammography is a better test for detecting breast cancer early when it is treatable
