Regular exercise may be key to staving off
serious disease, such as diabetes, heart
disease and dementia, but a study in the
British Journal of Sports Medicine concludes
high calorie diets are the real problem. The
authors say high calorie diets now generate
more ill health than physical inactivity,
smoking and alcohol combined. Even many
people within a normal range of weight
harbor harmful metabolic abnormalities
associated with obesity. The British
researchers say it is time to bust the myth
that anyone, including athletes, can outrun
a bad diet. Public health messages
focusing on maintaining a healthy weight
through counting calories are not helpful.
The study says what matters in reducing
metabolic syndrome is the source of the
calories—especially sugars and carbs.
