Skateboarding can be a fun recreational
and competitive sport. But in saying that,
Dr. Lara McKenzie, of Nationwide
Children’s Hospital, also says the growing
sport has also seen an increasing number
of injuries. Her team examined
skateboard injuries treated in emergency
rooms over nearly two decades. They
found about one hundred seventy-six
young people needed treatment every day
for injuries ranging from fractures to
bruises. Those in the eleven to fourteen
age group were hospitalized more than
younger and older children—boys far more
than girls. Dr. McKenzie tells parents to
make sure their skateboarders wear
protective gear like helmets, wrist guards,
elbow and knee pads. The report is in the
journal Injury Epidemiology.
