CUTTING SUGAR

from Ohio State University

About eighty percent of young people, especially those between twelve and nineteen get about one-quarter of their daily calories from sugar-sweetened soda. It is the largest source of added sugar in the American diet. However, a study from Ohio State University provides an encouraging method to get teens to cut back on sugary soft drinks, sports and energy drinks and flavored milk and coffee. Students enrolled their peers to take part in a thirty-day challenge to cut back—not necessarily eliminate—sugar-sweetened drinks. Thirty days after the study ended nearly two-thirds of students had cut back consumption to fewer than three days a week, along with a significant reduction in total amount of sweetened beverages. Water consumption increased by one-third. Researchers say the idea teaches kids how to reduce risky behaviors.
