SALTY TALK

from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

For decades, we have been advised to limit salt or sodium for heart health and yet new research suggests salt intake has increased, especially in people with high blood pressure—those who most should be watching their sodium consumption. A team from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School enlisted thirteen thousand people with high blood pressure and found that over more than a decade daily sodium intake increased by more than fourteen percent overall and even more among Hispanic and African-American participants. Lead author Dr. Elena Dolmatova says telling people to limit their sodium intake has not been enough. She urges finding a way to convince people that they should not wait until they have a heart attack before taking action.
