PRO-VEGETARIAN

from American Heart Association

A look at the eating and lifestyle habits of nearly a half million people from ten European countries provides some healthy clues. In a presentation to the American Heart Association, researchers reported people who ate a pro-vegetarian diet—one higher in plant-based foods than animal-based foods—reduce their risk of dying from heart disease and stroke. The authors say a pro-vegetarian diet doesn’t make absolute recommendations about the proportion of plant to animal based foods, but those who ate seventy percent of their food from plant sources had twenty percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to the least pro-vegetarian. They say instead of drastic avoidance of animal-based foods, substituting some of the meat in your diet with plant-based food may be a very simple, useful way to lower your risks.
