Despite earlier worries about an increased
risk of heart disease from drinking coffee a
recent review of thirty six studies shows
moderate coffee consumption may decrease
the risk of heart disease. The latest study in
the British Medical Journal of twenty-five
thousand men and women compared
different levels of coffee consumption with
no coffee consumption and took into
consideration a variety of other factors such
as smoking, alcohol, diet and family history
of heart disease. They found the level of
blocked arteries was least among people
drinking three to five cups of coffee per day,
while those drinking less than one cup per
day and those drinking five or more cups per
day had similar higher levels of artery
blockage. Among the possible reasons is
coffee might reduce the risk of type 2
diabetes, a strong risk factor for
atherosclerosis.
