FIGHTING THE OPIOID CRISIS

More than eighty-one thousand people died from opioid overdoses in one recent twelve-month period in the United States. That crisis brought experts from healthcare and government, including first responders and community leaders together to develop recommendations. Their work is detailed in the peer-reviewed Permanente Journal. They noted that while instances of substance use have remained relatively stable, overdoses have increased dramatically. They call for greater public awareness of the crisis and wider availability of naloxone, the life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. The group also called for more effective community partnerships to prevent further needless loss of life from illicit availability of opioids
