POLLUTION EFFECT ON THE BRAIN

from journal Environmental Health

Air pollution, specifically pollution related to traffic, has long been considered harmful to our lungs. New research also links traffic pollution to impaired brain function. The study, in the journal Environmental Health, shows just two hours of exposure to diesel exhaust decreases functional connectivity between areas of the brain. The Canadian researchers say this is the first study of its kind, but already offers some recommendations. First author, Dr. Jodie Gawryluck says people may want to think twice the next time they’re stuck in traffic with the windows rolled down. Make sure your vehicle’s cabin air filter is in good working order and if you’re walking or biking down a busy street, consider diverting to a less busy route.
