GET MORE SLEEP

from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston

There are a lot of health reasons to get adequate sleep, and among the latest reasons is kidney function. Data from the Nurses Health Study finds kidney function may be harmed when sleep is disrupted. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston say shorter sleep duration is linked to a more rapid decline in kidney function. They say women sleeping five hours a night increased risk of a rapid decline in kidney function by sixty-five percent compared to women sleeping seven to eight hours a night. Lead researcher Dr. Claran McMullan reported to the American Society of Nephrology that this is the first prospective study to find shorter sleep duration is linked with a more rapid decline in kidney function and further confirms the need for adequate, uninterrupted sleep.
