The leading cause of permanent vision loss in
older people, age-related macular
degeneration or AMD, is often treated only
after vision problems occur. A new study
suggests signs of this disease may begin
earlier than previously thought—even before
vision loss becomes apparent. The study, in
the journal Scientific Reports, suggests further
research is needed to be able to identify signs
of AMD earlier, including whether certain
genetic factors put peope at risk. Until then,
changes in lifestyle may help those at risk for
vision loss. One of the authors,
ophthalmologist Andrew Lotery says changing
to a Mediterranean style diet, exercising more
and quitting smoking may help slow
progression of AMD.
