Worldwide, drunk driving is a major problem,
despite decades of health promotion. In
countries with legal alcohol limits, it is usually
the driver who makes a judgement about how
fit they are to drive. That is a problem.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge in
the UK showed as many as one-half of the
participants in their study underestimated how
drunk they were, which could have
devastating consequences. The study, in the
Harm Reduction Journal, also noted that the
more participants had to drink, the poorer
they did on estimating their judgement and
ability. The take-away message from
researchers may be obvious: If you’re
driving, just don’t drink and if you really feel
like a drink, have a better understanding of
your alcohol tolerance.
