HYPERTENSION & COGNITIVE DECLINE

from American Heart Association journal Hypertension

Nearly one-half of American adults have high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for cognitive decline. Research published in the American Heart Association journal, Hypertension, initially expected that the effects of high blood pressure would be greater if it started at a younger age. However, researchers found similar acceleration in cognitive function whether high blood pressure started in middle age or at older ages. They found high blood pressure at any age, no matter how long a person has it, may speed cognitive decline. There is good news, though. Researchers found effectively treating high blood pressure at any age may reduce or prevent the accelerated decline.
