Pneumonia is a leading, but largely
preventable, cause of death among older
people, the very young and among those with
pre-existing health conditions. This report
focuses on reducing risk of pneumonia.
Results of ten different studies, compiled by
scientists at the University of Bristol and
published the journal Geroscience, showed
regular exercise lowered the risk of
developing pneumonia compared to people
who were least active. That was true, even
taking into account known factors, including
alcohol consumption, smoking and preexisting
conditions. Authors of the study did
not determine the amount and intensity of
physical activity essential to prevent
pneumonia, but some of results suggest
walking for thirty minutes once a week has a
protective effect.
