MARIJUANA AND MEDICATION

from journal Drug Metabolism and Disposition

With increasing legalization of marijuana, we continue to see unexpected side effects. Among the latest comes in a study from Washington State University and published in the journal Drug Metabolism and Disposition. Authors looked at cannabinoids—a group of substances found in the blood of cannabis users. Those substances interfere with the ability to metabolize a wide range of drugs prescribed for a variety of conditions. The result can be either decrease the positive effects of medication or increase negative effects—meaning marijuana might help reduce pain, but could make a medication more toxic. Authors say more research is needed, but the early takeaway message is to be careful if using cannabis with prescription drugs.
