AIR POLLUTION

from European Heart Journal

More than three million deaths worldwide are caused by air pollution each year. In saying that, British cardiologist Robert F. Storey says there is now ample evidence that air pollution contributes to development of cardiovascular disease and makes existing heart conditions worse. He wrote in the European Heart Journal that avoiding air pollution where possible may help reduce cardiovascular risk. Specifically, his paper recommends avoiding walking and cycling in streets with high traffic, especially in rush hour traffic. He also suggests limiting time spent outdoors during high pollution days or hours—a recommendation especially for the elderly, infants and people who already have cardiovascular disorders. Obese people and those with diabetes may also be at higher risk because of air pollution
