LIGHT VS. HEAVY

from journal Applied Physiology

Using heavy weights to build strength and muscle is traditional workout wisdom. A new study from McMaster University in Canada challenges that notion by providing evidence that lighter weights are just as effective. Researchers wrote in the journal Applied Physiology that it doesn’t matter if the weights are heavy or light because fatigue is the key. In two groups of experienced weight lifters, one group lifted heavier weights and the other lighter weights—each to the point of exhaustion. Researchers analyzed the muscle and blood samples from each group and found gains in muscle mass and fiber were virtually identical. Even though the men in the study were experienced weight lifters, researchers say for those of us who are “mere mortals” lighter weights can bring improved strength without compromise.
