from Journal of Nutrition
You may have heard that certain nuts,
including walnuts, and some fruits are
beneficial to health. Researchers at
Brigham and Women’s Hospital and
Harvard Medical School say a lot of that
previous research looked into specific
health conditions, but less on quality of life
and ability to maintain independence as
we age. They wrote in the Journal of
Nutrition that eating an overall healthy
diet, including certain foods such as
walnuts may help women keep the ability
to do everyday tasks as they age.
Researchers looked at data from more
than fifty thousand women in the Nurses’
Health Study for clues. Why walnuts?
The article notes they are composed
primarily of polyunsaturated fat, including
alpha-linolenic acid, the plant version of
omega-3. We should note the research
was supported in part by the California
Walnut Commission.
