STEM CELL QUESTIONS

from journal Cell Stem Cell

Stem cell treatments are becoming more common in this country. You might think that is good news, but an article in the journal Cell Stem Cell reveals that at least three hundred fifty companies and more than five hundred individual clinics across nearly every state are marketing unapproved stem cell procedures. Most of these—over three hundred—market interventions for orthopedic issues, including sports injuries. Others offer stem cell treatments for pain, neurological diseases and even immune disorders. Coauthor Leigh Turner, of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Minnesota, says it appears that regulatory oversight is minimal. She asks does that mean people are getting access to safe and effective treatments or is this basically unapproved human experimentation?
