Good news if you walk for your exercise.
New research shows the traditional
standardized formula to estimate calories
burned by walking is wrong. Southern
Methodist University researchers discovered
we likely burn more calories when walking
with a new standardized equation. They
found the old method, used for nearly a half
century, predicted too few calories burned in
ninety-seven percent of cases. The new
equation, reported in the Journal of Applied
Physiology, is about four times more
accurate for adults and kids combined. It
improves on existing standards by including
different sized people and drawing on a
larger sample group. The bottom line: not
only is walking healthy, it is better for most
of us than we thought.
