from American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Lawn-mowing season is here in most parts of
the country—and just in time for a warning
from the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons about mower injuries to children.
The study showed nearly all of the injuries
occurred between April and September, most
to boys and more than half of the injuries
involved riding mowers. Even worse, more
than one-half of the lawn mower injuries
monitored in the state of Pennsylvania
required an amputation. Common
circumstances involved children running
behind a mower, slipping under the mower
while riding as a passenger and even being
struck as the mower rolled over on an
uneven surface. Authors say not all parents
know or heed the warnings.
