from Nationwide Children's Hospital
This is the season for toys and while toys are
an important way for children to develop,
learn and explore, some pose an injury risk. A
new study from Nationwide Children’s
Hospital say a child was treated every three
minutes from a toy‐related injury during one
recent year—up nearly forty percent during
two decades. Kinds of injuries vary with age.
Children younger than three are at particular
risk of choking on small toys or small parts of
toys. Older children are at risk from riding
toys, specifically foot‐powered scooters which
account for much of the overall increase in toy
injuries. Among the recommendations:
Follow age guidelines for all toys and examine
toys for small parts that could be choking
hazards for young children. Closely supervise
children younger than eight on a riding toy
and have them wear helmets, knee pads and
elbow pads on scooters and other riding toys.
