COUNTER WEIGHT

from journal Health Education and Behavior

In one of the more unusual studies I’ve seen, Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab photographed more than two hundred American kitchens to determine if the food sitting on the counter could predict the weight of the woman living in each home. Yes, it can. The study found that women who had breakfast cereal on their kitchen counters tended to weigh twenty pounds more than those who didn’t. Women who had a bowl of fruit on their counters weighed about thirteen pounds less. But the women with soft drinks sitting out were likely to weight about twenty-five pounds more. Lead author Brian Wansink said the cereal association shocked him. He says cereal is considered healthy, but if you eat a handful every time you walk by, it won’t make you skinny. The study appears in the journal Health Education and Behavior.
