ASTHMA & EXERCISE

from American College of Chest Physicians

Aerobic exercise with asthma may sound counter-productive, but a new study from Montreal found exercise resulted in significantly better control of asthma. Participants were adults with previously poor control of their asthma. Part of the group went through the twelve-week program with their usual asthma care, while another group took part in structured, supervised aerobic exercise. Those who exercised had statistically improved asthma control, less need for short-acting inhalers and fewer symptoms of depression. Lead author Dr. Simon Bacon reported to the meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians that a twelve-week structured aerobic program could be helpful as an adjunct to current pharmacological treatment in adult asthma patients who have difficulty controlling their disease
