SUGAR SAG

from Baylor College of Medicine

Have you ever heard of sugar sag? Dr. Rajani Katta, a dermatology professor at Baylor College of Medicine explains sugar sag is what happens over time to the elasticity in our skin from high levels of sugar in our blood. Despite the name, sugar may not be the only culprit. She says any foods that raise blood sugar, including simple carbohydrates such as white bread and white rice can, over time, accelerate the natural aging process of our skin. Elevated blood sugar can lead to changes in the collagen and elastic fibers of the skin, promoting wrinkles. Dr. Katta recommends more fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices in our diets to prevent sugar sag and its damaging effects, such as wrinkles and jowls. She says the idea is better skin from the inside out—that what you eat affects your skin.
