Food insecurity—defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for a healthy life—affects an estimated fifteen million households in this country. While food insecurity of children is an ongoing issue, a new study, led by researchers at the University of California San Francisco, links food insecurity to memory and dementia in older adults. Authors reviewed diets of seven thousand older adults to show those affected by food insecurity faced greater risk of dementia, poorer memory function and faster memory decline. The study in JAMA Network Open points to various programs available to help those who are food insecure.
