Maintaining or even improving bone health in young women is important for overall health and may help decrease the risk of osteoporosis later in life—especially those who are dieting. In saying that, researchers at McMaster University found that a calorie-restricted diet that is higher in protein and lower in carbohydrates, coupled with daily exercise has a major benefit for bone health in overweight young women. The study, in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, clearly showed protein from dairy sources is important when aiming to avoid accelerated bone loss during weight loss. The researchers say the study is further evidence to recommend dairy products for what they call high-quality weight loss. The study was partly funded by the dairy industry in Canada and the U.S
