from American Academy of Pediatrics
Young athletes sometimes engage in what is called “making weight”, losing or gaining weight to achieve more competitive physiques. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns these may risk short and long-term health problems, risk injury and may even hurt athletic performance. Newly updated guidelines on the topic are published in the journal Pediatrics. They say continued use of unhealthy weight loss methods can cause reduced muscle strength, lower speed or less stamina in aerobic activities. Less well-known are decreased mental performance and possible changes in the body’s immune system. All of these quick-fix risks are contrary to the many benefits of sports for young people.
