BIGGER WAIST, SMALLER BRAIN

from journal Metabolic Brain Disease

It is no secret that a high-fat diet can make us fat, especially around the waist. But what a fatty diet does for the waist, it does the opposite for our brain. An international study shows diminished cognitive ability in laboratory animals. Authors of the report in the journal Metabolic Brain Disease say obesity and resulting diabetes impair the central nervous system worsening the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other mental health disorders. They found a link between weight gain and poor metabolism resulting from the brain. Although the study demonstrated this in laboratory animals, authors say it suggests the importance of addressing the likely risk in humans of cognitive decline from high-fat diets.
