DRINKING TOO MUCH

from Journal of Substance Abuse

Do you drink alcohol? This is not a judgement question, since some studies suggest light to moderate use of alcohol may have health benefits. But, a study led by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine, found almost one-half of adults in this country who drink, drink risky amounts. The study, published in the Journal of Substance Abuse, defined risky drinking as more than fourteen drinks per week on average or more than four drinks on an occasion for men—three for women. Another finding was nearly three-quarters of those who began risky drinking were still doing so two to four years later. Predictors of drinking too much include being younger and male, using tobacco or other drugs.
