Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death and many people are unaware of their cardio risk until they experience a cardiovascular event—sometimes fatal. An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal points out that cardio risks are modifiable with lifestyle changes. There is now an online heart health calculator to help predict heart health and even estimate heart age—which may be different than your chronological age. The calculator allows us to accurately predict risk of hospitalization or death within the next five years. That may be a sobering thought, except that the information gives us an opportunity to change the risk by changing our lives. The calculator is at ProjectBigLife.ca.
