from American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
Pre-season football workouts have begun and the intense practices have come under scrutiny from research presented to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. It notes that the number of traumatic injuries from playing football has declined significantly, while the number of non-traumatic deaths has remained the same. The researchers found most of those non-traumatic fatalities among high school and college athletes do not occur during games, but rather during conditioning drills that are often associated with overexertion. The paper states that conditioning-related fatalities are preventable by establishing standards for workouts and allowing athletic healthcare providers complete authority over medical decisions.
