RESISTANCE EXERCISE, NOT RESISTANCE TO EXERCISE

from Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research

Exercise is important to all ages and for elderly people, one type of exercise in particular. A position statement from Quest Diagnostics is published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. It suggests resistance exercise is vital to improving health and longevity for many older people. Lead author Dr. Maren Fragala says the statement provides evidence-based recommendations for exercise focused on building muscle endurance in older people. She also says it includes guidelines for how to optimize resistance training programs to ensure safety and effectiveness. The statement is supported by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and should be a topic discussed by elderly people with their health care providers.
