E-CIGARETTE UPDATE

from Canadian Journal of Cardiology

In the continuing debate over the safety of e-cigarettes, two cardiovascular specialists at UCLA have published a review of scientific evidence in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology. The first issue they tackled was the comparative safety of e-cigarettes to tobacco cigarettes. They point out that tobacco cigarettes are lethal, killing up to one-half of the people who use them. Their review observes that e-cigarettes appear to be less harmful. However, e-cigarettes have major potential risks that may be underestimated. Smoking one to three e-cigarettes a day has almost the same cardiovascular risk as smoking three packs of tobacco cigarettes per day. The review specifically urges banning flavored e-cigarettes, which target young non-smokers.
