MORE IS BETTER THAN SOME

from American Journal of Preventive Medicine

Common medical opinion is that some exercise is better than none. I was comfortable with that advice until a new study suggesting minimum exercise guidelines are not enough to reduce chances of high blood pressure, a condition that may lead to heart attack; stroke or dementia in later life. The study, at the University of California San Francisco, suggests boosting exercise to as much as five hours a week may protect against high blood pressure, particularly if it is sustained through our thirties, forties and fifties. In this study, high blood pressure was anything above 130 over 80. The American Journal of Preventive Medicine reports more than five thousand young adults were followed for thirty years to obtain the study’s conclusion.
