Statins are widely prescribed to reduce cholesterol, lower risk of heart attacks and strokes, but life-saving benefits may be enjoyed by one particular group of patients. For the millions of American adults with high levels of LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol—that is levels over one hundred--statins are likely to reduce the risk of death. University of Iowa epidemiologists reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association on a review of more than thirty previous statin studies involving two hundred seventy thousand people. The authors say unfortunately many American with higher cholesterol levels are not being treated and lives are unnecessarily being lost.
